The Astra Foundation is hoping to identify other funders who may be interested in aligned funding to support organisations developing the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEA) global treaty to end plastic pollution.
32% of plastics ends up in the environment. 40% ends up in landfill. 14% is incinerated, producing toxic ash and smoke. Only 2% is effectively recycled, and 14% is downcycled before ending up in the environment, landfill or incinerated.
The proposed UNEA global treaty is key to addressing the issue of plastic pollution in all aspects of the plastics lifecycle. Producers pass on the blame to poor waste management by authorities. Consumers can only access sustainable refill solutions if there is the infrastructure and resource to do so. Corporations are aware that they need to switch to a circular economy.
Astra is keen to speak to other funders about their current work and potential to share information on key civil society organisations that are tackling this issue - including funders focused (whether in the UK or internationally) on oil, gas, corporate responsibility, ocean and environment, zero waste, circular economy and climate and decarbonisation.

Who was involved
The Astra Foundation is currently supporting the development of a database of international laws and regulations regarding plastics, which will be a key tool as member states will start to look at their own legislative frameworks (via a US charitable organisation, Plastic Pollution Coalition).
There is also opportunity to engage with grassroots members of Break Free From Plastic, the plastic producers and organisations holding the oil industry to account, who see plastics as their plan b.
