Aims and activities
The We’re Right Here campaign is working to build a united movement for community power, spanning places and communities across the country as well as across the political spectrum. A group of funders are supporting this campaign, working together in a co-ordinated way, playing an active role in governance through the campaign steering group and taking on specific roles, for example with policy development.
We believe in a community-powered UK, where people across the country find connection, purpose and pride in local action. Where decisions are made at the most local level possible, and people’s understanding of and passion for their areas is embraced and put to good use. Where community organisations and groups are trusted and supported to get on with the work of improving their places, and public institutions work in genuine partnership with communities.
We are campaigning for a Community Power Act to give communities more control over the spaces, services and spending decisions which shape their places and futures. We see this as the first step towards bringing about the fundamental change we need, and unlocking the power and potential contained within each and every one of our neighbourhoods.
How to get involved
As we enter our second year, we are looking to build on our initial success (activating the movement; persuading key political figures of our goal, including Labour front bench) and meet the ambition of the campaign. We are looking to bring more funders into campaign and movement, whether they already support the concept of community power/control, or are considering it.
A slide deck outlining achievements and learning from year 1 and ambition for year 2 (including the need for greater resource and how it would be put to use) is available. Please contact Will Brett, campaign director, for more information.

The campaign is currently supported by nine national organisations contributing resource (in cash or in kind): People's Health Trust, Power to Change, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Cares Family, Locality, New Local, Young Foundation, Friends Provident Foundation, Local Trust, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
We are explicitly led by eight community leaders from around the country, who meet with the national organisations and campaign director Will Brett every fortnight to set strategy for the campaign. We are also supported by hundreds of community leaders engaged in the campaign.
Note: We’re Right Here is currently a campaign centred on English legislation. But we are keen to explore how we can build the movement in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Please get in touch if you would like to help.
