What: The launch of Funding Justice 2: social justice grant-making in the UK 2021/2022

When: 26th October 2023, 11am-12.15pm

The Civic Power Fund and Jon Cracknell from The Hour is Late have analysed 18,816 grants from 60 known social justice funders. These grants total £952.4 million, c.21% of UK foundation giving in 2021/22.

We will share the initial findings in this launch event and follow up with the comprehensive report.

The research aims to increase our shared understanding of where social justice funding is going, and - given the urgency of our times - whether we are getting the balance right. It maps how much foundation giving goes to work addressing injustice in the UK, and looks in detail at how social justice funding is allocated.

Building on Funding Justice 1, this year's analysis applies a movement ecology framework to UK social justice funding. Early results show that the vast majority is going towards ‘service delivery’ or ‘inside game’ work. By contrast, little is reaching ‘outside game’ activities that are vital in the pursuit of systemic change.

The research also maps the geographic and issue spread of UK social justice funding and begins to explore ‘churn’ in the allocation of grants.
